The collection consists mainly of the museum's original core and important acquisitions such as the Vittorio Pighi Collections (of more than 2,000 specimens), Glauco Grecchi (with about 1,000 specimens) and the historic Bagatti Collection, which is correlated with 270 photographic plates and 184 slides on glass made by the same collector in the early decades of the century.
The Geological Museum from 1927 to the present, has collected many historical artifacts, including fossils of all kinds and a vast array of minerals.
